Donor Car |
|
Hopefully somewhere on your driveway or in your garden you will have room to put your Golden Egg your DONOR CAR. Try to source a donor car which can supply all your drive needs ie: Engine, Gearbox, axle and front hubs. Look for a donor car ideally and MOT write-off, this could be a car with a good engine and gearbox etc but the bodywork, floor, chassis are rotted away beyond economical repair, after all you do not need these anyway. Look for ads in local papers, salvage yards, ask at MOT stations and of course check E-Bay for damaged repairables. I personally look in peoples gardens as I drive past. Look for cars that have not moved for a long time and look old and tired. Knock on the door and ask politely if you can clear the car away or for a little cost, Whats the worst that can happen? They can say no! A thing to think about is early ford cars such as Escorts, Capri's and Sierra's are fantastic Donor's but are GETTING RARER day by day! |

Keep your donor car for as long as you can store it, because when it has gone, I promise you that you will need something from it that you have forgotten, no matter how small . Remember you will always need, Grab a coffee this could be a long one! Engine and all ancillaries, gearbox, axle/IRS, propshaft, steering rack, steering column and wheel, battery, horns, radiator, brake master cylinder, hand brake, fuel filler cap, seat belts, electrical fuses, relays, switches, light bulbs, mirrors, instruments, wheels and tyres, and remember a nice looking set of alloys will finish off your dream machine nicely. Laws are always changing and when you register your Locost you will have to prove your engine and drive components are genuine, not stolen. The best way to prove this is to keep receipts, and documents from the donor car. The log book with engine number and vin plates and of course photographs are ideal. And of course if you use a large percentage of the drive components from the donor car you will be able to use the registration number or a age related number plate. If not you will have to register the vehicle on a Q plate, not very impressive! As this denotes a car of unknown origin. |
